About Thai Baht

The Thai Baht is the official currency of Thailand. Its ISO 4217 code is THB and its symbol is: ฿,. Each Baht is divided into 100 satang. The Bank of Thailand is responsible for issuing banknotes and coins.

History of the currency of Thailand

Before the Bath the currency of Thailand was the Tical, both Bath and Tical coexisted until 1910. Both were important currencies and were coined so much in gold as in silver, their value depended on the weight of each coin. After 1910, the Ticals were no longer issued and Thailand began to use only the Bath.

How curious... Did you know that the citizens of Thailand before paying with coins and notes did so with shells, clay coins and Pot Duang? The Pot Duang was used for more than 600 years in the Kingdom of Siam (now Thailand). The Pot Duang was made in silver although there are also known series made in gold and copper. They had a spherical shape that was achieved by folding a small bar; the weight marked its value.
