About the Taiwan Dollar
The Taiwan Dollar is the official currency of the state of Taiwan. Its ISO 4217 code is TWD and its symbol is $ or NT$. The Taiwanese Dollar is divided into 100 cents.
History of the Taiwanese Currency
The New Taiwan Dollar was first issued in June 1949 to replace the Old Taiwan Dollar, due to the high inflation suffered by Taiwan and China during the Chinese Civil War. Its exchange rate was $40,000 to the New Dollar. This currency coexisted with the Chinese Yuan as the Republic of China's currency in circulation until the year 2000, when the New Taiwanese Dollar was established as the official currency of the Republic of China, thus replacing the Silver Yuan.
Taiwanese Dollar banknotes and coins
The Taiwanese dollar notes are 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 dollars. The banknotes in circulation are those issued since 2001 by the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
The 100 Taiwan Dollar notes are red in color, on the front we can see the portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a Chinese philosopher, physicist and politician known as the "Father of the Nation". On the back of these banknotes is the image of the Chung-Shan building, built as an homage to Sun Yan-set.
The 200 dollar banknotes are green in color and depict Chiang Kai-shek, a former president of Taiwan and military leader. On the back of these notes we see the presidential building, located in Zhongzheng district.
As for the 500 notes, they are brown and on the front we can see a baseball team, one of the most followed sports in Taiwan. On the back we see the image of several deer, a species native to Taiwan and in the background the Dabajian Mountain.
The 1000 Dollar banknotes from Taiwan are blue. On the front we see the representation of elementary education through several children studying the globe. On the back of these notes we find the image of a Mikado, a bird that lives in Yushan, the highest mountain in Taiwan, which is also represented on these notes.
The 2000 Taiwanese dollar banknotes are predominantly purple. The front of the note commemorates the achievements of the National Taiwan Space Organization. On the back of these notes there is a drawing of two salmon and in the background Nanhu Mountain, one of the highest mountains in Taiwan.
Finally, there are commemorative 100 Taiwanese Dollar notes issued in 2011. This banknote commemorates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China, the name by which Taiwan is known. These bills are the same as the regular $100 bills, but with an inscription on the back that reads in Chinese "Celebrating 100 years since the foundation of the Republic of China".
The Taiwan Dollar coins are from ½, 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Dollars, although the ones which are used the most are the 1, 5, 10 and 50 Dollars. In 2010 the coins of ½ TWD were more expensive to manufacture than the value they had by themselves.
