About the Riyal of Saudi Arabia

The Riyal of Saudi Arabia or Saudi Riyal is the official currency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is divided into 100 halalá and its ISO 4217 code is SAR. They are represented by the symbol ر.س or SR.

History of the currency of Saudi Arabia

The Riyal has been the official currency of the country since its formation in the 1930s. Previously in the region of Hijaz (territory west of Saudi Arabia) the currency used had the same denomination. In 1932, Hijaz annexed the other territories that are part of present-day Saudi Arabia and the country was formed as we know it today. The Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority is in charge of issuing the Saudi Riyals.

Saudi Riyal's outstanding banknotes are 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 Riyals and belong to the sixth issue series. In the banknotes appear the Kings Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (Current King of Saudi Arabia) and Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud (first King of the country) along with different places representative of Islam and the country.

With the sixth series there are also in circulation the notes of series 5 and 4 that are 1, 5, 10, 50 and 500 Riyales. In addition to two commemorative notes of 200 and 20 Riyales.

Saudi Riyal coins are 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 Halalas and 1 and 2 Riyals. The denomination appears on the tail of all coins. On the head of the coins of Riyals appears the image of King Salman with his name. In the halala coins the national emblem appears, a palm tree on two criss-crossed scimitars. The years that appear on the coins are the years of minting according to the Muslim and Gregorian calendar.
