About Qatari Riyal

The Qatari Riyal is the official currency of Qatar. Its ISO code 7214 is QAR. Each Riyal is divided into 100 dirham. Its symbol is ر.ق, but QR is also used.

History of the currency of Qatar

At the beginning of the 20th century in Qatar and other countries of the Persian Gulf like Kuwait or Bahrain, the Indian Rupee was used as an official currency (under the influence of the United Kingdom that dominated India and those countries). This was a great effort for India and, shortly after becoming independent from the United Kingdom, the government of India decided to issue in 1959 a different Rupee for these countries: the Gulf Rupee.

During the decade of the 60, the countries that used the Gulf Rupee were becoming independent from the United Kingdom and were issuing their own currency.

The Qatar Riyal began to be issued as the official currency of Qatar in 1966.

Notes and coins of Qatari Riyal

Riyal Qatari notes are 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 Rials. The notes currently in circulation are from the fourth series issued in 2003 and updated in 2007-2008.

Current Qatari Riyal banknotes

In Eurochange we can accept all the notes issued in 2007-2008 and some of those issued in 2003 (those of 1, 5, 10 and 50 Riyals).

On the obverse of the notes all the inscriptions appear in Arabic and on the back they appear in English.

As for the design, on the obverse appear several ornamental motifs, an arcade and the coat of arms of the country. On the reverse side of the note of 1 Riyal there are three native bird species: a crested lark, a bee-eater and a plover. In the case of the 5 note, on the background appear the facade of the building of the old National Museum of Qatar and a dromedary and several specimens of gazelle on the front. On the 10 Riyals note there is a dhow (a typical Arab boat). In the 50’s there is the Pearl and Oyster Fountain of Doha. In the one of 100 the Al-Shaqab Equestrian Academy appears. In the 500 there are the Al-Shuyoukh Mosque and a hawk.

The Qatar Riyal coins are 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 Rials. In them appear the denomination of each currency and a representation of the coat of arms of Qatar with a dhow on the sea in front of an island with two palm trees.
