About the New Zealand Dollar
The New Zealand Dollar is the official currency of New Zealand, the Cook Islands (where it coexists with the Cook Islands Dollar), Niue, Tokelau and the Pitcairn Islands. Its ISO 4217 code is NZD. Each dollar is divided into 100 cents. Its symbol is $, but often NZ $ is written to differentiate it from other denominations of the Dollar. They are also colloquially called kiwis because the image of the national bird, the kiwi, appears on the 1 dollar coin.
History of the currency of New Zealand
Until 1967 the legal currency was the New Zealand Pound. The pound was divided into 20 shillings and each shilling into 12 pennies. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the possibility of changing the currency to a simpler decimal system ended in 1967 when the New Zealand Pound was exchanged for the New Zealand Dollar.
Banknotes and coins of New Zealand Dollar
The New Zealand Dollar notes in circulation are 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Dollars, all of them made of polymer. On the obverse of the banknotes appear images of illustrious New Zealanders from various fields as well as Queen Elizabeth II (in the $ 20 note). On the reverse appear different native birds.
Since 2015 there is a new series of tickets that will replace the previous ones. The images represented will be the same but with a slightly different design and incorporating new security measures. In the beginning, the two series will coexist for an indefinite time.
The 5 New Zealand Dollar note has on the obverse the portrait of Sir Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand mountaineer who climbed Everest in 1953. In his reverse he has the image of a yellow-eyed penguin (Hoiho), one of the rarest species in the world. Its color is orange brown.
In the 10 New Zealand Dollar note, two colors, blue and green, are combined. On its obverse, it has an image of Kate Sheppard who promoted the campaign in favor of the vote of women in the country. Thanks to her, New Zealand was the first country in the world where all adults had the right to vote, in 1893. On its back it has an image of the "Blue Duck", which is in danger of extinction.
The 20 New Zealand Dollar note has on its front an image of Queen Elizabeth II and on its back the image of a New Zealand hawk also known as Kārearea. It's a green note.
The predominant color of the 50 New Zealand Dollar note is violet. On the front of the note you will find Sir Apirana Ngata, who played a very important role in the recovery of the Māori ethnic group during the first years of the 20th century. He was also the first Māori to graduate from a New Zealand University. On the front you will find a Kōkako, a crow recognized for its blue-green plumage.
The 100 New Zealand Dollar note is magenta. On the front of the note you will see an image of Lord Rutherford of Nelson, internationally known as the father of the atom. On the back you will see the image of the Yellowhead / Mōhua, a canary known as "Bush Canary" and recognized by its yellow head.
