Enjoy the Bonfires and the night San Juan

Bonfires of San Juan are the official celebrations of the city of Alicante

There are various opinions on what is the origin of the celebrations of San Juan (Saint John). However, for one reason or another, it's celebrated nearly enough the same way in different locations all around the world.

San Juan in Alicante

The bonfires of San Juan are the official celebrations of the city of Alicante. In the beginning farmers celebrated the arrival of summer with parties and bonfires in the streets year after year, which were forbidden by the City. Finally, in 1928, with the intention of attracting tourists, the City Council decreed to organize the first authorized bonfires of San Juan. Since then, year after year more bonfire committees are created by the different neighborhoods of the city and has become an international tourist attraction.

However, it is not necessary to travel to Alicante to enjoy this celebration. In Benidorm and Torrevieja, there is also tradition to celebrate the Bonfires of San Juan. Bonfires Commissions of different neighborhoods mount their bonfire and barrack and whoever can come and enjoy the festival, which ends on the night of the 24th of June with the "cremà" (burning) of the bonfires.

Night of San Juan

One of the most popular acts, apart from the "cremà" is the celebration of the Night of San Juan (between june 23rd and June 24th). The night before the burning of the bonfires, in the towns of the coast of Alicante its traditional to go to the beach, light small fires to burn the bad experiences and take a purifying bath at twelve o'clock at night. In some locations it is possible to enjoy fireworks and musical performances.

In addition, the more superstitious have a wide range of rituals for their desires: jump nine waves to get pregnant, write three wishes and throw into the sea, jump the fire to be protected during the year… Don't forget not to look in a mirror that night or the spell will have no effect.

Whether you intend to perform a ritual to fulfill your desires, as you just want to enjoy one of our most popular traditions, do not miss the opportunity to visit the bonfires, witness the "mascletàs" (lighting of the firecrackers) and take a night swim at our beaches.

Benidorm best beaches

Choose your favorite beach

In Benidorm we have two big white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters: Levante and Poniente. Also between the viewpoint of the old town and the port we have the beach Cala del Mal Pas, which is a lot quieter. However, if you want to unwind and relax, we recommend the Coves of Tio Ximo or La Almadrava where you can dive or lay on a rocks to sunbathe. Dont forget about sun protection: umbrella, sunglasses and sunscreen are your best allies for a beach day.

Views from Castell de Guadalest

Castell de Guadalest

Castell de Guadalest is a village located just over 20 km from Benidorm on the inside of the comarca of Marina Baixa. Besides being a charming town thanks to its location, its white houses and cobblestones streets, it is very picturesque with all the amount of shops and museums that focus on the village: craft shops, museums of miniatures, cribs, historical cars, medieval, salt and pepper shakers. And, of course, you will find a wide variety of restaurants where you can enjoy local cuisine.

Excursion to Benidorm's Island

Excursion to the island of Benidorm

Another excursion not to be missed is Benidorm's island. The boat leaves from the port and you can see the skyline of Benidorm from the sea (or the seabed on the boat through its underwater view) and after a nice boat ride you get to the island. There is a tour in a sub marine, athe trail that will take you to the top of the mountain, you can snorkel around or just relax on the stone beach. Although you can prepare your own picnic, there you will find restaurants with rice dishes.

Les nits de Castell

The viewpoint of the castle, also known as "Balcony of the Mediterranean" is known for offering some of the best views of the two main beaches of Benidorm. If the view in the day is very nice, dont miss out on the night view which is spectacular. Besides the views, during Easter and summer take place "Les Nits Castell" in the streets with stalls with handicrafts of all kinds are set up.

The first thing to know about Istanbul is that it is located between two seas (the Black and Aegean) and divided by the Bosphorus Strait. The Strait also defines the two continents: Europe and Asia. The main tourist attractions are located in the European part, however you can catch a ferry and reach the Asian side in about 20 minutes. Cross from one continent to another poses no impediment and you can take a walk on the Asian continent.

Mosques

The main mosques of Istanbul are St. Sophia and the Blue Mosque. You should not miss them. Remember you are in a Muslim country and to respect their traditions is important whenever you travel. Follow their rules and you'll fit right in.

Eating kebab and more

Clearly, the kebab is Turkish food of excellence. Almost anywhere in the world you can find an establishment where you can taste this tasty dish. But the Turkish dont just live off Kebabs (although if you try a Kebab there it has nothing to do with fast-food Kebab that you can find here). In Istanbul you can taste the jewels of the Turkish cuisine: meze (hummus, falafel, dolma, olives or Tulum cheese among others), roast meats such as Kuzu Düğün Kizartmasi (roast lamb) or grilled fish such as Lüfer (Bosphorus fish). Also worth mentioning is the many varieties of tea and sweets manufactured from nuts like the Baklava (puff pastry with pistachios and syrup).

Take a Turkish bath

The Turkish baths are also known as Arabs or Hammam baths. Its a bathroom that serves to wash and to relax at the same time and it consists of four phases: the relaxation in a warm room, then you pass in to the a hot room. After, a swim in a cold pool and then relaxation in the cooling room. It can also be combined with therapeutic massages for different purposes. A spa day that will relax you after long days of touring the city.

5 tips for traveling to Denmark

Things to keep in mind before planning a trip to Denmark

Are you going to travel soon to Denmark? Get ready for a Christmas fairytale. Below we give you 5 tips for a magical winter holiday in the Danish territory.

Christmas market - Tívoli garden

1. Christmas markets

In the northern regions the Christmas atmosphere is intense and on the street! In spite of the low temperatures, the Danish themselves love to go for a walk, buy typical products, have a glass of Gløgg (mulled wine that is often taken at the time of Advent) or a small snack between friends in the many christmas markets which are installed throughout the country. Since mid-November you'll find christmas markets by parks and squares and you'll be captivated by the Christmas spirit.

2. Weather

The Danish winter begins in December, however if you have chosen to travel at the end of November, you'll find low temperatures with a minimum of 0 ºC and maximum of 12 or even some drizzle of sleet. Bring warm clothing and a good insulating shoes will be the key to success. If everything is waterproof, much better.

3. The currency

The official currency in Denmark is the Danish krone. We recommend that you exchange your euros to krone before your trip, especially to pay for the first "purchases" such as tickets for public transport or taxis that take you from the airport to the hotel. It is also advisable to carry cash in DKK to pay in those places where they do not accept bank card. If you pay with your bank card, you should inform before the travel and ask about the commissions charged for making payments in foreign currencies. You can check the exchange rate of the danish krone (DKK) in Eurochange

gingerbread biscuits

4. Christmas Cuisine

The star dish of the Danish christmas is pork roast with potatoes and red cabbage. However, you should not pass up the opportunity to taste typical dishes such as salmon or herring. As for the drink you'll find a wide variety of wines and beers. However, we recommend that you look for Julebryg, this is a special beer for Christmas that the Tuborg factory (one of the major Danish beers) makes a little stronger and darker than normal. If you're more a sweet tooth, you'll love the classic gingerbread biscuits.

Mermaid of Copenhague

5. The little mermaid in Copenhagen

The little mermaid in Copenhagen is the most famous symbol of the city. The legend says that a fisherman from the city was bewitched by a mermaid on the edges of the port while he was fishing. Finally the mermaid resigned her immortality in exchange for being endowed with the aspect of a woman and to be able to live happily together with her beloved. It is located in the bay of Copenhagen, close to the port. If you are visiting the city, you won't want to leave without be photographed next to this enigmatic monument.

Whether we have convinced you of the charms of this country and your now preparing a suitcase or  already had a trip planned, remember that in Eurochange you can exchange your euros to DKK at the best rates. You can also make a reservation to ensure that your amount is available for the date of your trip.

This beach receives swimmers who enjoy sunbathing comfortably in the sand, also receives athletes who have fun with cable water ski which was the very first in Spain. Also on Levante beach you can find a multitude of restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors, hotels,… ideal to spend the day and complete your beach experience.

If you prefer another type of beaches more intimate then we recommend la Cala tio ximo, Almadrava or Mal Pas.

Cala Mal Pas Benidorm

The Cala Mal Pas

Mal Pas Cove is just the beach that separates the Levante beach from Poniente beach, its affixed to the port of Benidorm and is right at the foot of the Castle (your view from the looking point of the castle is one of the most emblematic of the city).  It is a small beach, 120 meters in length, white sand and very calm waters.

Cala del Tio Ximo

The cala Tio Ximo is a small beach about 70 metres long with a 6 metres wide approximately has a mix of sand and stones are characterized above all by its crystal clear waters. This in the Rincón de Loix, just at the foot of Sierra Helada. In spite of having reduced dimensions the cala counts with sun beds and umbrellas. After a good dip, for the lovers of trekking, we suggest you try the route that leads you to the cross of Benidorm, to enjoy one of the best views of Benidorm.

Cala Almadraba

The cala Almadraba, close to the Cala del Tio Ximo, it is a cove of similar dimensions. You can access it in car and like in La cala Tio Ximo you can also rent sunbeds or umbrellas in high season.
