New currencies: JOD, TWD and UYU

New currencies: Jordanian Dinar, Taiwanese Dollar and Uruguayan Peso

Since last week we have three new currencies available in Eurochange: The Jordanian Dinar, the Taiwan Dollar and the Uruguayan Peso. They all can be changed into Euros or you will be able to buy them with the best rates.

Petra in Jordan

Ruins of the city of Petra in Jordan

Jordanian Dinar (JOD)

The Jordanian Dinar is the official currency of Jordan. Jordan has become one of the most demanded Arab destinations for its mix of culture and history and for being one of the most open and modern Middle Eastern countries.

Among its tourist charms is the capital, Amman, with its Citadel, its Roman Theater and the ruins of the Temple of Hercules and, more current, the souks, mosques and museums. Outside of Amman the ruins of Petra are the most visited place with about 1 million visits a year. The Dead Sea and the Wadi Rum desert are other places that the traveler should visit.

Taipei in Taiwan

Taiwan Dollar (TWD)

The Taiwan Dollar is the currency you will need to travel to Taiwan. Taiwan is a destination in Southeast Asia that is often ruled out as a holiday destination because its neighbors to China, Japan, Vietnam or Thailand are often the preferred options. But it is a country that surprises visitors who, more and more, are encouraged to visit it.

In the capital you will find essential places such as the National Palace Museum or the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall without overlooking the Taipei 101, the tallest building and emblem of the city. Outside the capital the charms do not disappear. Large cities are mixed with Natural Parks such as the Taroko and with beaches where you can dive, surf and other water sports or just lie in the sun and enjoy the sunset.

Punta Diablo in Uruguay

Uruguayan Peso (UYU)

The Uruguayan Peso is the official currency and, therefore, you will need to change your Euros to Uruguayan Peso if you are traveling to this country. As in the case of Taiwan, it is possible that Uruguay is a less demanded destination because it is located between Argentina and Brazil, two large tourist receivers. However, it’s a good option to visit, not so crowded and with very good options for the traveler.

In Montevideo you can enjoy one of the largest cities in Latin America full of life and history. With emblematic buildings and vestiges of the settlers, surrounded by beaches and very close to the Río de la Plata that borders Argentina. And, if you are looking for nature and beaches, you can get lost in the Santa Teresa or Cabo Polonio National Parks.

New 20 Pound polymer banknote

This is the new 20 Sterling Pound note

As we already told you about the 5 Pound note and the 10 Pound note, the Bank of England is in the process of renovating the Pound Sterling and they are replacing paper banknotes with polymer (plastic) ones.

New polymer 20 Pound note

On February 20 the new 20 Pound Sterling polymer banknote will be in circulation.

What will the new 20 Pound note look like?

In this new note the image of Queen Elizabeth II remains on the obverse, but on the reverse the character is renewed. Adam Smith present on the cotton paper note will be replaced by the painter William Turner, famous landscape designer of the 18th and 19th centuries who stood out in oil painting as well as in watercolor.

In addition, this new note will incorporate security measures similar to those that already have the 5 and 10 Pound notes as the see through window, the hologram with changing text or the 3D silver printing of the Crown.

How long will the 20 Pound paper notes be valid?

For now, the 20 Pound paper banknotes will remain valid until further notice and can be used interchangeably with those made of polymer.

We will notify you in our blog when the withdrawal will occur so you can change them before they stop being in circulation.

New 1,000 Norwegian Krone note

The old notes of 1,000 Norwegian Krone will remain valid until their withdrawal in November 2020. The other denominations of the old series have already been withdrawn, so they have no legal validity.

How to change banknotes out of circulation?

Banknotes out of circulation of any currency can only be exchanged at the issuing bank, which is usually the Central Bank of the country.

Sometimes there are deadlines to change old bills and, although it is not usual, some charge a small fee for making the change.

Design of the new 100 HKD note

For this new issue, the different issuing banks of the Hong Kong Dollar have agreed to standardize the design and make banknotes more easily recognizable. In addition, the reverse side of the banknotes has a vertical orientation instead of the traditional horizontal orientation.

The theme of the 100 Hong Kong Dollar note is its cultural legacy that is expressed with several representations of the Cantonese opera on the reverse of the notes. The same designs are maintained on the obverse as on the other banknotes in the series: the Bank of China Tower, the Standard Chartered Bank Tower and the HSBC emblem lion.

These new banknotes will be in circulation with the previous series until further notice by the Monetary Authorities of Hong Kong.

Travel to Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic is one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean. Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Bavaro Beach, La Romana or Santiago de los Caballeros are just some of the places where thousands of tourists decide to spend their vacations, honeymoon trips, study trips,…

With its offer of beaches, adventure tourism, natural spaces and fun are the perfect option to travel with friends, as a couple or as a family.

Carry Euros, Dollars or Dominican Pesos?

It is the most frequently asked question we usually ask when traveling to destinations in the Caribbean or South America.

And our answer is the same: as long as you can take local currency, the better. In the more tourist destinations they will accept payments by Euros or Dollars, but the change that they will apply will be the one they want. For example, something that costs 200 Pesos (just over 2.50 Euros) can be charged at 3-4 dollars. And if you carry Euros, they will charge you the same, 3-4 Euros.

With which the worst option of all would be to bring Euros to pay. The intermediate would be to carry Dollars, but the best option is to carry Pesos and make payments in the local currency. In addition, making the change in Spain will ensure the change you are going to pay and you can have the most controlled forecast of expenses. Since if you decide to change it there, you will have to find where to make the change, that you do not charge commissions and waste your vacation time in making the transaction. So our advice is that you change the Euros that you want to take to Dominican Pesos here and that you forget to make the change during your vacations.

New 100 Swiss Francs (CHF) banknote

New note of 100 Swiss Francs in circulation

As we advanced a few months ago, the Central Bank of Switzerland is in the process of renewing Swiss Franc (CHF) banknotes in circulation.

On September 12, the new 100 Swiss Franc notes, which are the last denomination to be renewed, were released.

New 100 Swiss Francs banknote

The 100 Swiss Franc note maintains the color blue as in the previous series, but incorporates a renewed design. The key motif of the note is the Swiss humanitarian tradition expressed with water and represented with joined hands holding water and with the layout of the network of waterways and rivers in the country.

On the back of the note there is an irrigation canal next to the walls of a mountain with which water from the thaw is supplied to the fields located on lower ground.

With this last note of the ninth series, currently the 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 1,000 Swiss Francs of both the ninth and eighth series coexist in circulation.

Until further notice all notes will be valid.

New commemorative banknotes of South African Rand

New series of South African Rand commemorative banknotes

In 2018, the Central Bank of South Africa issued new South African Rand tickets to commemorate what would have been the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela.

The new notes are of all denominations, of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Rand and in them, instead of appearing as in the previous series the 5 big ones of Africa, an image of Nelson Mandela appears as a young man surrounded by landscapes of representative places of his life.

Since the beginning of 2019 there are three new Hong Kong Dollar notes in circulation. This is the new now belonging to the 2018 series.

New 500 Hong Kong Dollars notes

This new denomination will be issued, as with all previous ones, by the three banks with authorization to issue Hong Kong currency: the Standard Chartered Bank, the Bank of China and the Bank of Hong Kong and Shanghai.

As usual, each of the notes will have its own design, the color of the three notes being brown.

Three different images of the Hong Kong Geopark appear on the three banknotes, a place with a high geographical value where you can observe the complete geological history of the region.

In the remainder of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 we can see the designs that have not yet been renewed of the 20, 50 and 100 Hong Kong Dollar banknotes.

New 200 and 1000 Swiss Franc banknotes

There are two new Swiss Francs banknotes in circulation

A few months ago we told you that the Swiss Franc is in the process of being renewed with the issuance of the ninth series of notes. At that time we show you the banknotes in circulation of 10, 20 and 50 Swiss Francs.

Currently, two other new banknotes of the new series are already in circulation, the one of 200 and the one of 1,000 Swiss Francs. In these new notes the same design line is followed as in the other notes of the ninth series, which is to highlight a characteristic of the country through the elements of the design of the notes.

In this case, the 200 Franc banknote is dedicated to the scientific excellence of Switzerland and the 1,000 banknote is dedicated to communication.

With these two new issues it would only be necessary to update the 100 Swiss Francs bill that will be put into circulation in September 2019.

All notes of the eighth and ninth series are legal tender and will coexist until further notice.

On our website you have more information about the legal tender bills of Swiss Franc.

The Europa Series is the new family of Euro notes that began to be issued in 2013 with the introduction of the new 5 Euro note. Since then the Central Bank has been issuing new notes of all denominations progressively until reaching the 100 and 200 ones.

This new series will have, therefore, notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Euros. It will not exist a 500 Euros note of this serie. But all the notes of the previous series will remain valid indefinitely including the previous 500 Euros one.

Security measures

The main difference that characterizes these notes of the new series is the side band that crosses the note from top to bottom with a hologram and a transparent window through which you can see the portrait of Europe.
